What a same-day job is

A same-day job is one item, or one load, collected from an address and delivered to another address before the day ends. It goes by road, in a van, from the first address to the second.

That is the whole difference from posting something. A parcel network is built around volume and averages, and it is very good at that. A van is built around one deadline. People call us when the deadline is the only part of the job that actually matters.

Distance is not the limit. London to Glasgow is the same kind of work as Camden to Croydon; it simply takes longer and costs more. The question that decides whether we can help is never how far, it is by when.

Who calls us for this

Two very different kinds of caller, with the same problem underneath.

  • Businesses with the work stopped

A missing part with a machine standing idle. A proof that has to be signed before a press run. An instrument a theatre needs before curtain-up. A file a solicitor needs in the morning. The delivery is rarely the expensive thing; standing still is.

  • People with one urgent thing

A passport left at home, keys in the wrong county, a laptop needed for an interview, medication, clothes for someone admitted to hospital. Most of these callers have never booked a courier and are working out the vocabulary as they go. That is fine. We will ask the questions.

  • Jobs the calendar did not allow for

Weekend breakdowns, bank holiday deadlines, the strange days between Christmas and the new year. The days when nothing is open are precisely the days when a van that answers the phone is worth the most.

How a same-day job runs

  1. The call

You give us the collection postcode, the delivery postcode, what the item is and the time it has to arrive by. Rough figures are fine to begin with; we will firm them up as we talk.

  2. The price

We quote the whole job as a single figure before anything moves. If the deadline cannot be met by road, we will say so rather than take the booking and hope.

  3. Collection

A van comes to the address you gave us. Tell us where it can stop, who is handing the item over and how to reach them, and the collection takes a few minutes instead of a phone call each way.

  4. The journey

The item is driven from one address to the other. If something changes on the road — a closure, a serious delay, a receiver who has moved — you hear it from us at the time rather than finding out at the other end.

  5. Delivery

It is handed to the person you named, at the address you named. We confirm back to you that it has arrived.

What the job includes

  • One price for the whole run

Quoted before collection and covering the journey from the first address to the second. If the job itself changes afterwards, you hear what that means at the time, not on an invoice later.

  • A van sized to the load

The vehicle is chosen for what is moving rather than what happens to be available. You are not paying for a Luton to carry an envelope, and a wardrobe is not going into a Caddy.

  • Availability that does not stop

Nights, weekends, bank holidays and Christmas. A collection at four in the morning is arranged the same way as one at four in the afternoon.

  • A person on the other end

Someone who can hear the deadline, ask the two questions that matter and tell you whether it is realistic. A booking form cannot do the useful half of that.

Vehicles and what fits

Load sizes are a working guide rather than a specification. Give us the dimensions and the weight on the call and we will confirm which van the job needs.

Small vanTransit Connect or Caddy class. Around 2.5 cubic metres, load length about 1.6 metres.Documents, single boxes, small parts, sample cases.
SWB or MWB TransitPanel van, roughly 6 to 9 cubic metres, load length from about 2.6 to 3.4 metres. Two or three pallets, stock, a room of boxes.
Luton with tail-liftBox body, roughly 18 to 20 cubic metres, load length around 4 metres.Bulky items, and loads that cannot be lifted by hand.
WeightPayload rises with the vehicle, from a few hundred kilograms in a small van to around a tonne in the larger ones.Tell us the heaviest single piece, not only the total.
Awkward shapesLong, tall or fragile items are usually a question of access and handling rather than volume.Measure the longest side before you call.
Loading helpIf one person cannot lift it, the job needs a tail-lift and we will send one.Say so early; it changes the vehicle, not the plan.

Same-day questions

How quickly can a van reach me?

It depends where you are and what is on the road at that moment. You will get a realistic collection window on the call, based on the actual situation, rather than a figure invented for a web page.

Can you collect outside working hours?

Yes. There are no working hours here in the usual sense. Nights, weekends, bank holidays and Christmas are all normal collection times.

What if I do not know the weight?

Estimate it. Tell us what the item is and roughly how big it is and we will size the van from the description. Over-describing costs nothing; a van arriving too small costs you the deadline.

Can you collect from one address and deliver to two?

Yes. That starts to look like a small multidrop run, but it is still one job and it is priced as one. Give us all the addresses on the call.

Is there anything you cannot carry?

Some things need specialist handling or paperwork we are not set up for. Describe the item when you call and you will get a straight yes or no immediately, rather than a driver turning up unable to take it.

Can someone else hand the item over?

Yes, as long as somebody is there. Give us a name and a mobile number for whoever is at the collection address and whoever is expecting it at the other end.

Do you deliver on a Sunday or a bank holiday?

Yes, and it is booked in exactly the same way as a weekday job. The days most suppliers are closed are ordinary working days here.

Give us the two postcodes

Call with the collection and delivery postcodes and a description of the item, and you will have a price on the same call.
