What luggage transfer is

It is a van, a driver and your bags. We collect luggage from one address and deliver it to another, so that nobody has to drag it onto a train, pay an airline to carry it, or force it into a car that was never going to hold it.

It is not a removal service and it is not a parcel service. A removal firm packs and dismantles furniture. A parcel service wants everything boxed, labelled and inside a size limit. Luggage transfer sits between the two: things that are already packed, already yours, and simply in the wrong place.

Most of these jobs are booked by people who have never used a courier, often at short notice, and usually with a flight, a check-in or a lease date attached. Say those times out loud when you call and we will work backwards from them rather than forwards from now.

When people use it

  • Airports

Luggage taken to or collected from an airport, or the cases that will not fit inside an airline allowance and would cost more to fly than to drive. Give us the terminal and the flight time, not just the airport.

  • Hotels and serviced apartments

Bags moved ahead of a check-in or after a check-out, so a day is not spent carrying them around a city, or shifted between two hotels when the plan changes halfway through a trip.

  • Universities

Moving into or out of halls at the start and end of term, when a car boot was never going to be enough and the round trip for a parent is five hours in each direction. Term dates fall on the same weekend for everybody, so the earlier this is booked the better.

  • Relocation

The luggage half of a move: cases, boxes, bedding and clothes going to the new address, either ahead of the furniture or instead of it. Common for people moving into furnished places, where the furniture is not the problem.

  • Long stays and coming home

Extended work postings, a stay with family, a hospital stay that ran longer than anyone planned, or a flat cleared at the end of a tenancy when the person who lived there is already somewhere else.

How a luggage move runs

  1. Tell us the bags and the times

How many pieces, roughly how big and how heavy, where they are now, where they are going, and the time that actually matters — a flight, a check-in, a hall closing, a lease ending.

  2. We quote the move

One price for the whole job, worked out from the distance, the number of pieces and the van the load needs. You hear it before anything is booked.

  3. Collection from the door

The bags are collected from the address you give us. If somebody else is handing them over — a parent, a housemate, a hotel porter, a hall warden — give us their name and mobile number.

  4. The drive

The luggage is driven to the delivery address. A long run across the country changes the timing and the price, not the way the job works.

  5. Handover

Delivered to the person or the desk you nominated. Hotels and halls usually want a name and a room or booking reference before they will accept bags, so have that ready when you book.

Worth thinking about before you call

  • Count the pieces

Six bags is a different van from two. Count everything, including the awkward shapes people forget: a bike box, a golf bag, a musical instrument, a folded pushchair.

  • Weigh the heaviest one

The total weight matters less than the single heaviest piece, because that is the one somebody has to lift. If one person cannot lift it alone, tell us and the job gets a tail-lift.

  • Access at both ends

A third-floor flat with no lift, a hotel with no loading bay, a hall of residence behind a barrier and a one-way system. None of it is a problem if we know in advance, and all of it is a problem if we do not.

  • Who is receiving

A porter, a warden, a relative, a letting agent. Somebody has to be there and has to have the authority to accept the bags on your behalf.

  • The deadline that actually counts

Not when you would like the bags to arrive, but the time after which they are no use. Flights and check-ins are hard deadlines. A lease end is usually softer than it first appears.

How much luggage fits

Rough capacities for the three vans, using an average large suitcase as the unit. Real numbers depend on the shapes involved, so we confirm against your actual list when we quote.

Small vanTransit Connect or Caddy class, around 2.5 cubic metres.Roughly six to ten large suitcases, packed sensibly.
SWB or MWB TransitPanel van, roughly 6 to 9 cubic metres, load length up to about 3.4 metres.Roughly twenty to thirty cases, or a full student room.
Luton with tail-liftBox body, roughly 18 to 20 cubic metres, load length around 4 metres.A flat's worth of cases, boxes and soft furnishings.
Heavy single piecesThe tail-lift on the Luton means nothing has to be lifted by hand at either end.Useful for trunks, instrument cases and packed crates.
Odd shapesBikes, skis, golf bags and instruments travel perfectly well in a van.Tell us the longest dimension when you call.
Small jobsTwo or three bags is a normal booking, not something too small to ask about. The van is sized down rather than the job turned away.

Luggage questions

Do I need to box everything up?

No. Suitcases, holdalls and rucksacks travel as they are. Anything loose, sharp or fragile is safer in a box, but a bag without a label is not going to get a job refused.

Can you take bags to or from an airport?

Yes. Give us the terminal, the flight time and a name and number for whoever is handing over or receiving, and the timings are planned backwards from the flight rather than forwards from the collection.

Can you collect if I am not there?

Yes, as long as somebody is. Name the person and give us their mobile number: a housemate, a parent, a hall warden, a hotel porter, a site manager.

How far will you go?

Anywhere in the United Kingdom. London to Aberdeen is a longer day and a larger price than London to Brighton, but it is the same job and it is booked the same way.

Do you move furniture as well?

Small items that one or two people can carry are usually fine, and a Luton with a tail-lift takes more than people expect. Whole rooms of furniture, dismantling and packing are a removal company's work, and we will tell you that rather than arrive underprepared.

What if my plans change?

Tell us as soon as you know. Times and addresses can usually be adjusted while the job is still being arranged. Once a van is loaded and moving there is less room to move, but call us and we will do what the day allows.

Can you do it at a weekend or on a bank holiday?

Yes. Term ends, flights and tenancy dates rarely land on convenient weekdays, which is exactly why we work every day of the year.

How do I know how big a van I need?

You do not have to work it out. Count the pieces, describe the biggest one, and we will choose the van. Over-estimating slightly is safer than discovering on the day that two bags will not fit.

Tell us how many bags and where they are going

Call with the number of pieces, both addresses and the time that matters. We will price the move on the call.
